Mike Ripley talked at length in interview about the contents and the many authors and works covered beyond the familiar fantasy-to-fiction axis of Fleming, Deighton and Le Carre. The first chapter is a bit of work out, a decent editor could have altered the book a wee bit so this chapter could have been added in the rest of the book. Very very good book on the 'golden age' of British thrillers from the early 50's to the mid to late 70s. Zella and crew prove that a Christian book geared towards teens can in fact be "real" without compromising morality.

Leslie Lamb weaves an honest and Do you remember how difficult your teen years were? Leslie Lamb weaves an honest and realistic account of teens walking through some of the toughest years of their lives.

Her characters are bold, strong, and easily arouse a plethora of emotions in the reader. Though I am not in her target audience youth or young adults , I found myself identifying with many of the thoughts and struggles her characters experienced.

It is told from Zella Storm's point of view. Zella is one of the main characters of the story and is just as unique as her name Zella has chosen to live quite differently from the majority of her peers in many ways In this anecdote, she is dear friends with one girl and bitter enemies with another.

In the meantime, a dreamboat of a guy comes into the picture that unintentionally threatens to throw off part of her plan of being different than the rest.

Leslie even makes you remember the warm, fuzzy feelings of first love, or first like, or first crush Without going into the story details because I can in no way do justice to the excellent job Leslie has done in writing this YA saga , I will say that Leslie has boldly tackled and brought to the surface some very real but hard to face teen topics If this is sounding in any way familiar to you because of someone in your life or yourself , please get a copy of this well-crafted, essential story of young adults at some of the most important and most difficult times of life.

I wish I had read this at a much younger age. It would surely make a great gift for anyone in this target audience.

Anyhow when Mike Ripley finally gets underway with his story he will place the the spy genre in its historical perspective, he does mainly talk about the British spy books and their writer.

It makes for fun ready and quite a few Aha moments when I recognize writers or books. I had forgotten my youthful days looking through dark and sometimes seedy 2nd hand bookstores I still like to visit them today, they have this magnetic effect on me and draw me straight of course of any different direction I was planning to go for anything of interest.

Writers like Alistair MacLean, Ian Fleming, Len Deigton, Hammond Innes, John le Carre get a light aimed at them and you get to find out where they can be placed within the Western post war history of England mostly.

The book does offer me some new insights in writers and books I might like to find or visit again.

However it has little meat on its bones. From page onward we get a large amount about the major writers of the spy book era written about in this book and quite a few pages of the little gods from the genre.

Overal well written and interesting for people who love the genre nonetheless and do enjoy a trip on memory lane.

But do remember this is the British story of writers that were part of a changing world and Empire and kept the British end up.

Mike Ripley certainly knows his stuff. He has undertaken a great deal of original research in what is clearly a labour of love - recovering the lost world of the post-war British thriller up to and through the s and providing a bit of pop history and sociology along the way.

This is the world of Desmond Bagley, Francis Clifford, Lionel Davidson, Len Deighton, Ian Fleming, Frederick Forsyth, Dick Francis, Adam Hall, Jack Higgins, Hammond Innes, John Le Carre, Gavin Lyall, Alistair Maclean, Ber Mike Ripley certainly knows his stuff.

This is the world of Desmond Bagley, Francis Clifford, Lionel Davidson, Len Deighton, Ian Fleming, Frederick Forsyth, Dick Francis, Adam Hall, Jack Higgins, Hammond Innes, John Le Carre, Gavin Lyall, Alistair Maclean, Berkely Mather, Wilbut Smith and Alan Williams.

It is a world of wartime derring-do, high seas adventure, exotic locations, heroes true and flawed , fantasy, espionage, Nazis, SMERSH, treachery, honour, beautiful women, fast cars, jungles and deserts, terrorists and fanatics - classically male territory.

The male beast, chained to modernity, had a brief period in Britain when he may have had a memory of war or watched major events unfold in the media but was now stuck in the , suited or blue collared, and expected to 'provide' for nuclear families in an era of nuclear threat.

Although life loosened up a little in the s for the few and not the many , the s were grey and depressed in Britain and the thriller in book and film relieved that sense of constraint.

It is probably no coincidence that the British thriller started to die off a bit with the Thatcher revolution. Whatever you thought of her, the woman did make life more insecure and possibly she created our currently emasculated world.

If you were struggling to cope with the world she made, you might find yourself less interested in reading about excitement than when there was none to be had.

The thriller has, of course, never quite died indeed, the American thriller soon replaced the British for the airport market but the era of Maclean, Innes and Fleming, then Deighton, Forsyth and Le Carre gave way to the British crime novel with its appeal to personal insecurity and women readers.

The mentality of fighting torturing mad Nazis in the jungles of South America tends to be a little different from coping with the mild neighbour who turns out to be a serial killer.

The first is a demand for violence against known evil, the second is a fear of violence from unknown evil-doers.

The trajectory is similar to that of the British film industry - a native tradition looking back to empire and dealing with the trauma of war working its way through to collapse in exhaustion and replacement by American equivalents and by new genres more suitable for a new generation.

It is, like so much written by men born in the s, an elegiac book, with nostalgia for a market that had its own design and content formulae.

Variations on themes acted much as poetic forms did in an earlier age. Innovation would come but lead to extensive copying and then new variations.

The reader was conservative but he could accept a radical change and a new convention if the innovation provided that 'frisson', the thrill of believing one was vicariously involved in a life or death struggle with the elements, an enemy or later treachery on one's own side.

Unfortunately the subject is still a slight one - this is, after all, just a branch of popular entertainment. Ripley struggles to give the subject coherence.

It does not contain an analysis that surprises or is of any great depth. It can occasionally feel a little repetitive and over-stretched.

There are, however, many insights - notably the professional origins of the authors with a strong showing for journalists, former service personnel and even technical and business types.

It was a genre intimately related to its market, giving it what it wanted on cue in its social context. The year is marked as a pivot of sorts with the film of 'Dr.

No' which triggered the massive influence of Ian Fleming in spy fantasy, the dominance of Alastair Maclean in the adventure market and Len Deighton's 'Ipcress File'.

A market that had been looking back towards a time when British adventurers mastered the world, wilderness and the seas shifted both into greater fantasy the Bond influence and into defensive Cold War spy fiction although Nazis remained a staple for villainy throughout as they do today.

There now appears to be a resurgence of interest in the thriller - in its American forms which are respected , in the appearance of works from the back catalogue and with some new British writing of consequence beginning to be noticed - and some authors never stopped writing.

It would be interesting to know what is driving this - genre antiquarianism, nostalgia especially for the Cold War , an interest in conspiracy as way station between the convoluted crime novel and the adventure novel, the influence of television and film, a quiet rebellion in favour of masculinity?

The book certainly has value. I am happy to keep it in my library if only because of the lengthy a third of the book reference sections with short biographies of the main writers of the genre and what Ripley calls the 'supporting cast', many of whom clearly deserve rediscovery.
